Bench-Marking
“Comparison is the thief of joy .” - Theodore Roosevelt
Yup , I always think that there is no point in comparing urself with others as no one in the entire world can do a better job of being you than you . Yet life seems to be a constant competition. We aspire to be smarter , wealthier , more outstanding and successful than everyone else . Instead of loving our neighbor ,we are often trying to out do him .
Society tells us there is a need to benchmark our lives with everyone else . We are expected to be more thriving than our parents , every family with multiple children suffer through bouts of sibling rivalry , and we all wanna surpass our frds and colleagues !

Does all of this bench-marking actually lead to a never ending cycle of looking for material things to make us happy ? Why do we always longing a bigger house , a better car , a bigger rock ? We actually spend a lot of time and energy on this constant search and at times neglect and take for granted what we already have ~ a good family , a loving partner and great frds . There will always be a time when others are smarter , prettier , stronger and richer . Should we stop bench-marking and just be happy with what we have and who we are ? Or instead of bench-marking up ,should we be bench-marking down , so we actually feel better about ourselves and about what we have accomplished .
My cousin J and her husband are a typical couple that is constantly bench-marking up ~ never being happy with what they have , always wanting a bigger house , a better car or a better social status . They actually spend a lot of time and energy on this constant search and at times neglect and take for granted what they already have ~ good jobs , great friends , a loving partner and their adorable son .
In an ideal world there would be no bench-marking ~ everyone happy with what they have , not what they are missing .
